McLean Community Center Presents July 4th Celeb at Langley High School

By:

One of the nation's most popular roots-rock band, Last Train Home, will be this year's featured entertainment at the McLean Community Center's (MCC) annual 4th of July Celebration. Produced by MCC, the celebration will be held on Monday, July 4, on the athletic field of Langley High School, 6520 Georgetown Pike.

The grounds will open at 6 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the fireworks display only will be presented on the rain date, Tuesday, July 5. Admission and parking are free. Smoking, pets, fireworks, sparklers and alcohol are not allowed on school grounds.

Although roots-rock is at the heart of Last Train Home's (LTH) sound, country, bluegrass, swing, blues, folk, pop and Tin Pan Alley influences also can be found in the group's repertoire. LTH frontman Eric Brace is a former staff writer for The Washington Post where he covered the local music and nightlife scene. What began as a part-time band in Washington D.C. in 1997 has evolved into an acclaimed, full-time touring group based out of Nashville.

The fireworks display will be provided by East Coast Pyrotechnics. The Joint Armed Forces Color Guard from the Military District of Washington will present the colors and bass-baritone Michael Sumuel, an alumnus of the young artist programs of the Houston Grand Opera and San Francisco Opera, will sing the national anthem. Sumuel will perform the role of Lelio in Wolf-Ferrari's Le donne curiose at Wolf Trap this summer.

Other attractions at the celebration include carnival rides and amusements, field games by Games 2U, music and free balloon sculptures. A variety of food and beverages will be for sale. The fireworks will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m.

A free shuttle bus service will be available from St. John's Episcopal Church (6715 Georgetown Pike) and MCC (1234 Ingleside Ave.), beginning at 7 p.m. A handicap-accessible bus will be available at both sites.
