McCarter's Mann Named One of NJ's 101 Most Influential

By:

McCarter Theatre Center Artistic Director and Resident Playwright Emily Mann has been named one of New Jersey's most influential people by New Jersey Monthly. The magazine's new "Power Issue", on newsstands now, lists 101 individuals, from politics to the arts, who have the most impact on the way we live in New Jersey.

New Jersey Monthly cited Emily Mann, now in her nineteenth season as artistic director and playwright in residence, for bringing fame and notoriety (and even a Tony Award) to Princeton's McCarter Theater. Mann has overseen 90 productions at McCarter-including shows from playwrights such as Edward Albee, Joyce Carol Oates, and Nilo Cruz -featuring such stage and screen luminaries as Jimmy Smits and Frances McDormand. Mann's own plays include an adaptation of Having Our Say, the story of the Delany Sisters, which went on to Broadway, and A Seagull in the Hamptons, which had its premiere at McCarter last spring. Ms. Mann is currently directing a production of Mrs. Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw.

According to the magazine, the list was compiled through informal polls conducted throughout the state by New Jersey Monthly editors and writers. The list, presented alphabetically, includes Garden State residents from the fields of politics, education, business, law, activism, sports, media, and the arts. In addition to Ms. Mann, other notable figures on the list include New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, Politicians Thomas Kean Jr. and Sr., State Senator Barbara Buono, New York Jets and Giants Owners Woody Johnson and John K. Mara, George Street Playhouse Managing Director Todd Schmidt, and Princeton University President Shirley Tilghman.
