On Monday, June 11, at 7 p.m., the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust welcomes the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra and special guest soloist, Marin Mazzie, for a musical event - Music for the Tempest-Tost: A Tribute to Emma Lazarus, inspired by the Museum's exhibit Emma Lazarus: Poet of Exiles.
The program will include the world premiere of music director Gary S. Fagin's "Cantata for Huddled Masses," a setting of Lazarus' "The New Colossus," for orchestra and soprano, along with a selection of pieces that influenced Lazarus or were inspired by her writing, including works by Mahler, Copland, Mendelssohn, and Schumann. See below for the full program.
Fagin says, "One element of the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra's mission is to create and perform music that reflects the unique history of Lower Manhattan. To celebrate the Museum of Jewish Heritage's exhibit and the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, the KCO has created an evening for the Museum that celebrates both Ms. Lazarus and Ms. Liberty."
He continues, "There is no venue more fitting than the Museum, overlooking New York Harbor, the gateway to untold thousands of immigrants, and the Statue of Liberty, to premiere 'Cantata for Huddled Masses.' "
Tickets are $18, $15 for students and seniors, and $12 members. Tickets are available online at www.mjhnyc.org or by calling the Museum box office at 646.437.4202.
