Mamma Mia! Headed to Big Screen

Variety reports that Mamma Mia! is headed to the big screen, aiming for a late 2007 release. A deal has been struck between Playtone, whose partners include Tom Hank, Gary Goetzman and Rita Wilson, and Littlestar, run by the show's producer Judy Craymer, as well as the Abba team of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. It's expected that the film will be financed and distributed by Universal Pictures. The show's bookwriter, Catherine Johnson has begun work already on a screenplay for the film. The musical has been seen by over 24 million people in over 115 cities across North America, Australia,
Europe and Asia. The British production of Mamma Mia! recently welcomed its 4 millionth patron to
the Prince of Wales Theatre and has extended
its booking period by 10 months through January 27, 2007. MAMMA MIA! is currently playing in 11 productions around the world performed in six different languages.

Mamma Mia! takes place on a tiny Greek Island, as a mother and daughter try to settle the girl's paternity before her wedding. The show is set to the songs of ABBA's Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, with hits including "Dancing Queen," "Money, Money, Money" and "The Winner Takes It All."
