Deadline reports that Mamie Gummer has signed on to star in the CBS adaptation of the best selling Swedish book series BACKSTROM. The actress joins previously announced cast members Rainn Wilson, Dennis Haysbert and Kristoffer Polaha.

The drama, based on the Swedish book series by criminologist and novelist Leif G.W. Persson, Backstrom, will tell the story of "an overweight, offensive, irascible detective as he tries, and fails, to change his self-destructive behavior."

Wilson will portray Detective Everett Backstrom, who is returning to head the department's elite Special Crimes Group after being disgraced. Gummer will take on the female lead as "Nicole Carlton", described as "a watchful, competent police detective who is a lesbian saddened over her breakup with her longtime partner."

Hart Hanson (Bones) will write and executive produce the pilot along with Persson and Niclas Salomonsson. Mark Mylod will direct the project from 20th Television.

Gummer has most recently been seen in the films 'Taking Woodstock' and John Carpenter's 'TheWard and Twelve Thirty'. Her TV credits include the 'The Map' on ABC, Emily Owens, M.D. on The CW and the John Adams miniseries on HBO.

Her theatre credits include Les Liasons Dangereuses, The School of Lies, Hunting and Gathering, Uncle Vanya, and The Water's Edge.
