The Toronto Star reports that actor John Malkovich is slated to bring 'The Infernal Comedy' to Toronto's fourth annual Luminato Festival in June. 'The Infernal Comedy' is an opera-chamber theatre piece based on the real-life story of notorious convicted serial killer Jack Unterweger. This will mark the North American premiere of the work.
In an interview with Martin Knealman of The Toronto Star, Malkovich confirms the production will play in Toronto. Malkovich also addresses Unterweger's twisted psyche which drives the dark production. "It helps that he is such a flamboyant character, and that's why I enjoy playing him," Malkovich said in a phone interview recently."
No official announcement has been made by the Luminato organizers, as the Star reports: "Luminato CEO Janice Price refused to comment, but the arts festival will be making major program announcements on Tuesday. Count on this to be one of them."
The Star also makes mention of the fact that while Malkovich is a renowned film actor, he continues to be drawn to live performance. "Live theatre should emphasize the live part." Malovich says. "It's by definition ephemeral. It's different every night, and that's what makes it magical. I don't want to give exactly the same performance 5,000 times. For me, it would be pointless."
