First performed amid scandal in 1906, the play explores the dawning sexual and intellectual awareness of young, German teenagers. Banned in its1917 New York run after one night, the play is comic, unsentimental, and brutally authentic. An ensemble of 20 actors, ranging in age from 14 to 70, perform the original 1906 script that was the basis for the 2007 Tony Winning Musical sensation. Wedekind's unsentimental and brutally authentic, comedic treatment of such radical content as teenage sex, and suicide created public outrage and charges of obscenity. Best-selling novelist Jonathan Franzen's exquisite translation captures all of the drama and sarcasm of the original script."SPRING AWAKENING is the best play ever written about teenagers." -Christopher Shinn, playwright
