'M. Butterfly' Opens at BoHo Theatre March 14

By:

Bohemian Theatre Ensemble presents M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang, opening March 14 with performances through April 20.

David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly is one of the most celebrated of recent American plays, and the first by an Asian-American to win universal acclaim. It was first produced in 1988 and won numerous awards, including the Tony Award for Best Play of the Year.

"Based on a true story that stunned the world, M. Butterfly opens in the cramped prison cell where diplomat Rene Gallimard is being held captive by the French government—and by his own illusions. In the darkness of his cell he recalls a time when desire seemed to give him wings. A time when Song Liling, the beautiful Chinese diva, touched him with a love as vivid, as seductive – and as elusive – as a butterfly," state press notes, "How could he have known, then, that his ideal woman carried with her many secrets? That she was actually a spy for the Chinese government using favor to extract vital information from Gallimard, arraying herself as the meek, submissive Asian female of his fantasies? In a series of flashbacks, the diplomat relives the twenty-year affair from the temptation to the seduction, from its consummation to the scandal that ultimately consumed them both. But in the end, there remains only one truth: Whether or not Gallimard's passion was a flight of fancy, it sparked the most vigorous emotions of his life."

BoHo Theatre at Heartland Studio is located at 7016 N. Glenwood, Chicago.  Opening Night is Friday, March 14 at 8PM with performances through Sunday April 20; running Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 8PM; and Sundays at 2PM.
