MTC's THE WHIPPING MAN Closes 4/10

By:

Manhattan Theatre Club's New York premiere of THE WHIPPING MAN, the acclaimed new play by Matthew Lopez, directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, will close on April 10 after 3 extensions. THE WHIPPING MAN opened on Tuesday to rave reviews at MTC at New York City Center - Stage I (131 West 55th Street).

THE WHIPPING MAN stars two-time Emmy Award winner André Braugher ("Men of a Certain Age," "Homicide"), André Holland (Joe Turner's Come and Gone, The Brother/Sister Plays), and Jay Wilkison (film version of Rabbit Hole).

Three men tied by faith, bound by secrets, at a crossroads-a Jewish Confederate soldier (Wilkison) who has returned from battle, and two former slaves (Braugher and Holland), who were raised as Jews in his household. As the three men reunite to celebrate Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets that might cost each man his freedom.

The design team for THE WHIPPING MAN includes John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), Jill BC Du Boff (sound design), Tom Watson (hair & wig design), and J. David Brimmer (fight direction).

MTC's 2011 spring Broadway season at the Samuel J. Friedman will include the upcoming world premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire's GOOD PEOPLE directed by Daniel Sullivan and Tyne Daly in a new production of Terrence McNally's MASTER CLASS directed by Stephen Wadsworth. In addition to THE WHIPPING MAN, MTC's Off-Broadway spring season at New York City Center - Stage I includes the world premiere of Daniel Goldfarb's THE EXTINCTION METHOD directed by Sam Buntrock.
