MCDC Announces Upcoming Program Including 42nd Street With Loretta Swit 7/19

By:

In production for more than 50 years, Merce Cunningham Dance Company's (MCDC) collaborations have featured groundbreaking artists trained in a variety of disciplines, resulting in some of the most limitless possibilities for human expression and movement. MCDC's forthcoming program is highlighted by the Split Sides piece, featuring the experimental music of Radiohead and Sigur Rós.

Each design element, including choreography, has been made in two parts either by one or two artists, or in the case of the music, by two bands. The order in which each design element is presented is determined by chance procedure the day of the performance. Impressively, MCDC has commissioned more work from contemporary composers than any other dance company in existence and has served as a collaborative partner for many visual and musical artists. On the short list, some famous partners of note were Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol. Cunningham's most recent collaboration, Nearly Ninety, took place on his 90th birthday this year.

An Evening with Joe Cocker
Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 8 p.m.
$25 lawn; $45 in-house

British soul singer Joe Cocker hits the Wolf Trap stage for an evening of nostalgia-filled hits
punctuated by his signature gravel-toned voice. Possessing what some consider to be the most
soulful and gospel-infused pipes in the history of rock 'n' roll, Cocker first got started in the
business in 1961, when his band, Vance Arnold and the Avengers, had some regional singles in
England. Cocker had a landmark year in 1969, with a rearrangement of "With a Little Help from
My Friends," a Beatles cover, which led to a groundbreaking performance and career defining
experience at Woodstock in 1969. In the '70s Cocker toured the United States and had some
major hits including Delta Lady and You Are So Beautiful. In 1982 Cocker performed a duet with
Jennifer Warnes, Up Where We Belong, which hit No. 1. As a notable lifetime achievement
award, Cocker was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) at the Queen's 2007 birthday
for his services to music.
