MCC Will Not Produce Musical 'The Black Suits'

By:

MCC Theatre will not produce The Black Suits, a musical that was originally to have been the third and final show of the company's 22nd Off Broadway season.

In a statement, Executive Director Blake West explained, "after investing two years of time and resources in The Black Suits, we feel we have gone as far with the project as we can.  Obviously, we were passionate about the piece and wish its creators well on their journey to bring it to the stage.  We are currently looking at a number of projects that we are very enthusiastic about producing and expect to make a formal announcement regarding our season's final show shortly."

The company's current production of Jim Knable's comedy of the unexpected Spain opens tonight at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street).  Under the direction of Jeremy Dobrish, Annabella Sciorra heads a cast featuring Michael Aronov, Tony Award-nominee Veanne Cox, Erik Jensen and Tony Award-nominee Lisa Kron.  Performances are Tuesday and Wednesday at 7PM, Thursday and Friday at 8PM, Saturday at 2PM & 8PM and Sunday at 3PM through November 17, 2007.  Individual tickets are $60 and are available through www.ticketcentral.com or by calling (212) 279-4200.

MCC Theater is one of New York City's leading Off Broadway theater companies, committed to presenting New York and world premieres each season.  When MCC Theater was founded in 1986, its mission was simple: to bring new theatrical voices to theater-going audiences.  MCC Theater continues to accomplish this yearly through presentation of its mainstage works; its Literary Program, which actively seeks and develops new and emerging writers and its Education & Outreach Program, allowing more than 1,200 students yearly to experience theater, increase literacy and discover their own voices in the arts.  Notable MCC Theater highlights include: the 2004 Tony-winning production of Bryony Lavery's Frozen; Neil LaBute's Fat Pig; Rebecca Gilman's The Glory of Living; Marsha Norman's Trudy Blue; Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit; Tim Blake Nelson's The Grey Zone and Alan Bowne's Beirut.  Over the years, the dedication to the work of new and emerging artists has earned MCC Theater a variety of awards.  For more information and a complete production history, visit www.MCCTheater.org
