Lorin Maazel To Ring Closing Bell Of New York Stock Exchange 6/22

Lorin Maazel will ring The Closing Bell of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Monday, June 22, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. as part of the grand finale events marking the finAl Weeks of his seven-year tenure as Music Director of the Philharmonic. He will be joined on the NYSE podium by Paul Calello, Chief Executive Officer of Credit Suisse's Investment Bank and New York Philharmonic Board Member, and by Gary W. Parr, who will become Chairman of the Philharmonic in the fall. The event can be viewed live via webcast beginning 3:59 PM EST on June 22 at http://www.nyse.com/attachment/liveflashbell.htm.

Mr. Maazel's final concerts with the Philharmonic will take place on June 24-27, 2009, when he conducts Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Symphony of a Thousand, at Avery Fisher Hall. This concert will be broadcast live on Thursday, June 25, 2009, beginning at 7:00 p.m., ET, on The New York Philharmonic This Week, a two-hour, national weekly radio program of concerts by the Philharmonic. The program is heard locally in the New York metropolitan area on 96.3 FM WQXR.

Lorin Maazel, Music Director of the New York Philharmonic since September 2002, has conducted 10 world premieres in the course of his tenure. He has led cycles of works by Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky, and conducted the Orchestra's inaugural performances in the DG Concerts series - a groundbreaking initiative to offer downloadable New York Philharmonic concerts exclusively on iTunes. He has taken the Orchestra on numerous international tours, including the historic visit to Pyongyang, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, in February 2008 - the first performance there by an American orchestra, and an event watched around the world. Mr. Maazel is also music director of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Spain. He has served as music director of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (1993-2002), and has held positions as music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1988-96); general manager and chief conductor of the Vienna Staatsoper (1982-84) - the first American to hold that position; music director of The Cleveland Orchestra (1972-82); and artistic director and chief conductor of the Deutsche Opera Berlin (1965-71). Mr. Maazel's opera, 1984, received its world premiere on May 3, 2005, at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and was revived in the 2007-08 season at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The DVD has been released on Decca.
