Local Theatre Companies Band Together To Form Consortium

By:

Six local theatre companies are setting a new example for theatre in Philadelphia. The companies are joining forces to create Off-Broad Street, a consortium of theatres that will foster and celebrate independent theatre in Philadelphia. This New Group wants to create audience recognition and make the public aware of the year-round presence of alterNative Theatre in Philadelphia. The consortium includes, 11th Hour Theatre Company, Azuka Theatre, Brat Productions, EgoPo Classic Theater, Inis Nua Theatre Company, and Mauckingbird Theatre Company. Information on all of the companies can be found online at www.offbroadstreet.org.

"With Live Arts and Philly Fringe around the corner, our six companies want to pool our resources to remind people that alterNative Theatre happens all year long, if you know where to look," said Azuka Theatre Artistic Director Kevin Glaccum. Azuka is leading the consortium. "Audiences often don't know where to find our companies, because companies our size have no fixed home. It confuses audiences. They consider where they are going to be the theater, and don't realize there are a variety of companies that can occupy that same space."

About Off-Broad Street
Off-Broad Street is a consortium of theatres designed to foster and celebrate independent theatre in Philadelphia. Off-Broad Street seeks to increase awareness of the high-quality, professional alternatives to the mainstream theatrical venues, and to nurture audiences' appreciation for adventurous, artist-driven theatre. Through our combined efforts, Off-Broad Street will advance the reputation of Philadelphia as a richly diverse theatre community.

Azuka Theatre is the lead organization in a group of small theater companies known as Off-Broad Street. These companies banded together in an effort to maximize their marketing efforts. As a group, the organization will be able to reach more people than the companies could individually. The six theater companies have very distinct and diverse missions, i.e. musical theater, Celtic theater, gay themed theater etc. so that their group marketing efforts would complement one another. By exposing Philadelphia audiences to each other's work they not only expand the number of people who see each show, but heighten the awareness of the public at large to the strength and diversity of the Philadelphia theater community.
