Lincoln Center Announces 2013-14 Shows; Ethan Hawke in MACBETH, Laurie Metcalf in DOMESTICATED & James Lapine-Helmed ACT ONE

Lincoln Center Theater has announced four productions to be produced in the Vivian Beaumont and Mitzi E. Newhouse Theaters during the 2013-2014 season: the world premiere of Domesticated, a new play by Bruce Norris, featuring Laurie Metcalf, directed by Anna D. Shapiro beginning performances Thursday, October 10 in the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater; a new production of Shakespeare's Macbeth, featuring Ethan Hawke in the title role, directed by Jack O'Brien, beginning performances Thursday, October 24 in the Vivian Beaumont Theater; Act One, adapted and directed by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart, beginning performances Thursday, March 20 in the Beaumont; and the world premiere of The City of Conversation, a new play by Anthony Giardina, directed by Doug Hughes, beginning performances Thursday, April 10 in the Newhouse. In addition to these four productions, LCT3, Lincoln Center Theater's initiative to produce the work of new artists and to engage new audiences, will produce a season of three plays, to be announced, in the Claire Tow Theater.

Domesticated

Commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater, Bruce Norris' new play about politics and gender will feature Laurie Metcalf and have sets by Todd Rosenthal, costumes by Jennifer Von Mayrhauser, lighting by James Ingalls and sound design by John Gromada.

Bruce Norris won the Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as London's Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for his play Clybourne Park. His other works include A Parallelogram, The Unmentionables, The Pain and the Itch, We All Went Down To Amsterdam, Purple Heart, and The Infidel. His work has been produced at Playwrights Horizons, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre and the Philadelphia Theatre Company.

Anna D. Shapiro directed Bruce Norris' A Parallelogram, The Unmentionables, The Pain and the Itch, Purple Heart and The Infidel. Winner of the Tony Award for her direction ofAugust: Osage County, her other NY credits include the Broadway production of The Motherfucker with the Hat.

Laurie Metcalf was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance this past season in The Other Place. Her other recent stage credits include the Broadway productions ofBrighton Beach Memoirs and November and the West End production of Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Macbeth

Performances begin Thursday, October 24

Opening night is Thursday, November 21

Ethan Hawke will be reunited with director Jack O'Brien for this new production of a work that is widely considered to be one of Shakespeare's darkest and most powerful tragedies. The production will have sets by Scott Pask, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Japhy Weideman and original music and sound design by Mark Bennett.

Ethan Hawke, star of the current hit films Before Midnight and The Purge, returns to Lincoln Center Theater where he was directed by Jack O'Brien in the Tony Award winning productions of Henry IV and The Coast of Utopia, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance as Michael Bakunin.

Jack O'Brien directed the current LCT production of The Nance and won Tony Awards for his direction of both The Coast of Utopia and Henry IV. His other LCT credits includeThe Invention of Love (Tony Award nomination), Pride's Crossing, The Little Foxes, Hapgood (Lucille Lortel Award) and Two Shakespearean Actors (Tony Award nomination).

James Lapine will direct his own adaptation of Moss Hart's classic autobiography which eloquently chronicles the playwright/director's impoverished childhood and his determined struggle to escape poverty and forge a career in the theater which led to his collaboration with George S. Kaufman and their first great success, Once In A Lifetime. Act Onewill have sets by Beowolf Boritt, costumes by Jane Greenwood, lighting by Ken Billington, original music by Jeanine Tesori and sound by Daniel Moses Schrier.

James Lapine returns to LCT where he wrote the book for the musical A New Brain (with music and lyrics by William Finn) and directed his play Twelve Dreams. Director of the current Broadway revival of Annie, he collaborated with Stephen Sondheim as author and director on the musicals Sunday in the Park with George (Pulitzer Prize), Into the Woods, Passion(Tony Award) and the multi-media revue Sondheim on Sondheim. With William Finn he has also collaborated on March of the Falsettos and, Falsettoland (later presented on Broadway asFalsettos), Muscle and the upcoming Little Miss Sunshine. On Broadway he also directed Golden Child, The Diary of Anne Frank, Amour and The 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. His other plays include Luck, Pluck and Virtue, The Moment When, Fran's Bed and Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing.

After their first collaboration on Once In A Lifetime, Moss Hart continued his collaboration with George S. Kaufman on a series of now classic comedies which include The Man Who Came To Dinner and You Can't Take It With You, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for DramA. Hart's solo works as a writer included the play Light UpThe Sky, the book for the musicalLady in the Dark and the screenplays for the films Gentleman's Agreement (Academy Award nomination), Hans Christian Anderson and the 1954 version of A Star Is Born which starred Judy Garland. As a director his credits include two legendary Broadway musicals - My Fair Lady and Camelot. Originally published in 1959, Act One was an extremely popular memoir. The landmark work, deemed one of the finest books about 20th-century American theater, quickly reached the top of best-seller lists and remained there for almost a year.

The City of Conversation

The City of Conversation tells the story of a political hostess, Hester Ferris, a behind the scenes mover and shaker in Washington, D.C., and of the political gains and personal losses that her choices inflict on her family over a period of 30 years, from the waning days of the Carter administration to the beginning of the Obama presidency.

Anthony Giardina is a playwright and novelist. His plays, including Living at Home, An American Family, Scenes from La Vie de Boheme, The Beach, Black Forest and Custody of the Eye,have been produced at Playwrights Horizons and Manhattan Theatre Club in New York and regionally at Arena Stage, Seattle Rep, Yale Rep, Long Wharf Theatre and the Cleveland Playhouse. He is the author of five novels, including his most recent Norumbega Park, and The Country of Marriage, a collection of stories.

Doug Hughes directed the LCT production of Richard Greenberg's The House in Town. His recent New York credits include The Big Knife, The Enemy of the People, Born Yesterday, The Royal Family, Mauritius, Doubt (for which he won a Tony Award), Frozen and The Whipping Man.

Complete casting and design teams for all four productions will be announced at a later date.

Lincoln Center Theater is currently presenting Douglas Carter Beane's The Nance, directed by Jack O'Brien, winner of 3 2013 Tony Awards, on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre where it's limited engagement run has been extended through Sunday, August 11, Richard Nelson's Nikolai and the Others, directed by David Cromer, which concludes its limited engagement run this Sunday at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater and the LCT3 production of Daniel Pearle's A Kid Like Jake, directed by Evan Cabnet, currently in previews and openingMonday, June 17 at the Claire Tow Theater.
