Life is a Cabaret at Florida Studio Theatre
FST's 2007-2008 Winter Cabaret Season has something for all music tastes. The season begins in classic style with a revival of the Cabaret's 1998 production of Harry Who? The Lullaby of Broadway followed by the elegance and sophistication of European Cabaret and ends with the truly American sounds of Outlaws & Angels. The first production in the 2007-2008 season is Harry Who? The Lullaby of Broadway, beginning October 23 in the Goldstein Cabaret and playing through January 5, 2008. Harry Who? is a vivacious musical revue of an often overlooked musical genius, Harry Warren.
"America's greatest unknown songwriter, Harry Warren was one of the most prolific composers during the golden era of the Hollywood musical. This show swings with his hummable hits including 'Jeepers Creepers,' 'Forty Second Street,' 'That's Amore' and 'We're in the Money.' Harry Who? was developed by Richard Hopkins and Jim Prosser," describe press materials.
Following is the elegant and politically charged European Cabaret, beginning January 8, 2008 in the Goldstein Cabaret and playing through March 22.
"In 1930's Europe, cabaret clubs became the beehive of Bohemian artists and intellectuals. They fiercely challenged social mores of the era. European Cabaret celebrates the sophisticated sounds and subversive ideas that exploded from this sub-culture. Featuring sexy songs like 'La Vie En Rose,' songs of danger like 'Mack the Knife' and songs of political protest like 'It's All a Swindle.' The artists of the era included Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Kurt Weill, Jacques Brel and many others. European Cabaret was developed by Richard Hopkins, Rebecca Langford and Jim Prosser," press notes state.
Finally, the 2007-2008 Cabaret season ends with the American sounds and stories of Outlaws & Angels which begins March 25, 2008 in the Goldstein Cabaret and plays through June 7.
The final cabaret show of the season is "a rousing celebration of songs by the rugged Outlaws of early Western music and the Angels who loved them," state press notes, "The show features music by legendary 'outlaws like Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash and "angels" such as Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton. The cast of Outlaws & Angels uses guitars and fiddles to tell the American story of lessons learned from hard knocks and lively living." Outlaws and Angels was developed by Rebecca Langford, Richard Hopkins, Cristin Kelly and Jim Prosser.
All 3 shows – Harry Who?, European Cabaret and Outlaws & Angels – will be presented at FST's Goldstein Cabaret. Single tickets range from $19 for previews to $26-$29 for regular performances.
