Producer Cameron Mackintosh announced today the final
extension of his current Broadway production of Boublil and Schonberg's Les Miserables, now through
Sunday, January 6 only at the Broadhurst Theatre (235 West 44th Street). The current
production of Les Miserables
opened on November 6 of 2006. Originally planned as a six-month limited
engagement, Les Miserables extended
by an additional nine months due to strong box-office sales.
The production will have played 17 previews and 479 regular
performances. Combined with the original production's 6,680 performances,
Les Miserables on
Broadway will have played a total of 7,176 performances. The original
production of Les Miserables
is the third longest-running show in Broadway history.
The musical currently features John Owen-Jones as Jean
Valjean, Robert Hunt as Javert, Judy Kuhn as Fantine, Gary Beach as
Thenardier, Jenny Galloway as Madame Thenardier, Megan McGinnis as Eponine,
Leah Horowitz as Cosette; Adam Jacobs as Marius and Max von Essen as
Enjolras.
Les Miserables
has been seen by over 55 million people in 40 countries and 21 languages since
its first London
performance in October 1985. The original Broadway production opened on
March 12, 1987, at the Broadway Theatre, winning eight Tony Awards that season,
including Best Musical. The London
production of Les Miserables,
now in its 23rd year, is the longest-running West End
or Broadway musical of all-time. In November 2008, Les Miserables will be the first
major Western musical to be performed in Mandarin, by an all Chinese cast at
the magnificent new National Grand Theater in Beijing
beside Tiananmen Square.
