Theatre veteran Adam Lambert is the subject of a new lawsuit that states the singer was ineligible for AMERICAN IDOL when he signed on in 2008.

The Hollywood Reporter quotes the lawsuit, filed by Lambert's former record company Colwel Platinum Entertainment, as stating that "Upon further information and belief, the rules governing appearances on and participation in American Idol when Lambert was a contestant provided, among other things, that contestants were ineligible if 'as of the date of [the] audition, [they had]...a music recording contract...or any other contractual arrangement that would prohibit [them] from entering into a...recording contract..." A violation of this provision was grounds for disqualification."

Lambert is an American singer, songwriter, and actor from San Diego, California. In May 2009, he finished as the runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol. The Times identified Lambert as the first openly gay mainstream pop artist to launch a career on a major label in the United States.
