La MaMa Presents TMTC's Hope Speaks 4/1-9
La MaMa presents The Movement Theatre Company (back in the club space for a limited engagement of Hope Speaks. Hope Speaks is a devised story telling piece created by Hope Speaks ensemble [Chanel Carroll, Cherrye J. Davis, Eric Lockley, Jonathan McCrory, Kimberly Young, and Kisa Willis.] and directed/conceived by Jonathan McCrory. This play was developed through TMTC's Ladder Series in 2010 and since then it has toured in Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD and is excited to be presented in the lower east side before it heads back on the road.
HOPE SPEAKS is an empowering, thought provoking, and dynamic devised storytelling piece that explores the historic 2008 Election of President Barack Obama. This play is a true melting pot of different ideas and throughout the journey of HOPE SPEAKS the ensemble members investigate and discover how race, class, and society play a strong role in defining America, and how we have fashioned a new icon of a black man. So join the conversation and let us take you back to experience the transformative power of the human spirit.
HOPE SPEAKS, was originally presented at Harlem School of the Arts and produced by The Movement Theatre Company [TMTC]. It was the first New York City based collaborative multimedia piece to chronicle the historic election of President Barack Obama. Since then this show has traveled to Washington, DC through the DC Black Theatre Festival, and Baltimore, MD at Baltimore Museum of Art. Still in development the show has been evolving through it's tour and is proud to have a total of 38 personal accounts incorporated into the show. Such accounts are from people such as Dean Mary Schmidt Campbell, Legendary Actor André DeShields, Scholar Bob Vorlicky, Legendary Actress Tina Shepard and Reverend Lakeesha Walrond.

The Movement Theatre Company is a group of young leaders who seek to create and support diverse representations of people of color in the arts and media. Founded in 2007, TMTC is a not-for-profit organization fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas and a member of the Alliance of Resident Theatres (A.R.T) and Harlem Arts Alliance. TMTC is a recipient of The Nancy Quinn Fund, a project of A.R.T./ New York, Ben & Jerry's Foundation Grant, Harlem Arts Alliance Community Fund, and The Etant donnés: The French-American Fund for the Performing Arts, a program of FACE.
