LOVE SONG HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES

The world premiere of Love Song arrives to the Downstairs Theatre at Steppenwolf, full of witty banter and heartfelt laughs.  This off-beat romantic comedy is written by the hot young playwright John Kolvenbach, whose work has been produced from New York to the West End.

In Kolvenbach's most recent work, he introduces us to a toll booth worker named Beane who is in the depths of depression and possibly a little crazy.  Beane, played compellingly by Ian Barford, comes home one day to find Molly sitting in his house.  Molly, played colorfully by Mariann Mayberry, is a female burglar who not only robs Beane of everything he owns, but also confronts him about his dismal existence.  Meeting Molly brings Beane out of his depression and without warning he becomes infatuated with everyday things such as how good a turkey sandwich tastes.

/>/>/>Beane's sister Joan, played to perfection by Molly Regan, lives with her husband Harry, played fittingly by Francis Guinan.  Their lives are a bit monotonous as they deal with the stresses of being rich and successful. Initially they are both alarmed at the intensity of Beane's new love interest. However, before long they become inspired by it and ultimately find new passion in their own marriage.  The funniest scene of the evening is when they both decide to call in sick to work.

The cleverly written script flows at a dizzying pace and allows the actors to capture the very essence of these characters.  They are so real and so much fun to watch that you feel like you are best friends with each of them. Director Austin Pendleton paints a beautiful picture on stage, assisted by Brian Bembridge's gorgeous set design, and the effective lighting design by Michelle Habeck. 

Love Song is comforting music to the ears.
