City College Center for the Arts (CCCA), NYC's newest center providing educational and artistic initiatives for students and the community, presents students of London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer. Modernized from its premiere performance in 1773, CCCA, as part of its Arts Summer Theatre Program will present a cast of eight student actors for eight performances, July 23- August 1, 2015 at Aaron Davis Hall.
Directed by LAMDA principal Joanna Read and design by Jacob Hughes, this farcical comedy of manners and young love amongst bad taste and complete chaos happens in a single night. A series of unlucky circumstances drives the plot forward, becoming more stimulating as well as lending more plausibility to the series of coincidences that conspire against the characters. With LAMDA students on the stage, and CCCA students working behind the scenes in the shows technical and front of house duties, the presentation and collaboration is one that brings the show into the hands of the students and into the community of City College and its Harlem neighborhood.
"LAMDA is delighted to be coming to City College this summer to present our production of She Stoops To Conquer, explains LAMDA principal Joanna Read. "Our students are thrilled to be performing at the historic City College and cannot wait to meet the audiences of New York and Harlem. This is a tremendous occasion for LAMDA and City College, working together to show the talents of the next generation of British and American actors."
"Several years ago I and four other City College representatives visited LAMDA and we were all extremely impressed with the achievements of the institution and its illustrious history. In fact, over four LAMDA alumni members were nominated for Oscar awards in 2015, that's an incredible record," explains CCCA Managing Directory Gregory Shanck. "As a result, The City College of New York began to award three scholarships to students in the Theater Department to study acting and stage direction in London at LAMDA. These scholarships are continually made possible by the generosity of CCCA Board Member, City College Fund Board Member and CCNY Alumnus, Patricia Hill."
In addition to the performances, FREE acting workshops with LAMDA Staff and Faculty will be open to the public July 27-29, at Aaron Davis Hall. A full list of workshops will be published on the City College Center for the Arts website at www.citycollegecenterforthearts.org.xcellence, passion, talent and imagination in the dramatic arts.
