Kent Haruf Novel Gets the Book-It Treatment

By:

A National Book Award finalist, Plainsong is Book-it Repertory Theatre's next world premiere adaptation. Set in the plains of rural Colorado, Plainsong weaves the stories of two bachelor farmers, a pregnant high school senior, a pair of motherless boys and a duo of devoted teacher into a tale of community, wisdom, and grace.

Adapted by Kevin McKeon and directed by Myra Platt, Plainsong is set in the ranchlands east of Denver. Haruf's book was roundly hailed by critics upon its publication in 1999. The New York Times Book Review called it "a novel of foursquare, so delicate and lovely…it has the power to exalt the reader."

Cast members include Kevin McKeon as Guthrie; Joy Anuhea Mederios as Victoria; Wesley Rice and Clark Sandford as the McPheron brothers; Annie Lareau as Maggie; and Evan Jayne and Kellan Larson as the two young brothers, Ike and Bobby. Also featured are Daniel Brockley, Rio Azul Codda, Ken Holmes, Laura Joralemon, Jody McCoy, Hilary Pickles, and Marissa Price.

Set designer for Plainsong is Bill Forrester, lighting designer is Jessica Trundy and costume designer is Linda Ross. Dan Dennis is sound designer with original music by Dave Ellis.

Book-It's main goal is to bring classic and contemporary writing to the stage and convert literary works into theatre. Book-It began in 1990 as a company of actors touring throughout Washington/>/>, performing at social service agencies, schools, community centers, and libraries. The unique Book-It style preserves the narrative text as it is spoken, not by a single "narrator" but as dialogue by the characters in the production.

Plainsong runs February 9th through March 5th. For tickets call (206) 216-0833, or visit www.book-it.org
