Ready the confetti. The Joyce is celebrating its second gala performance at the David H. Koch Theater, April 10 at 7:00pm, with a program that mixes and matches the best in the dance world-from all over the world. Let the balloons fly!
First, please help welcome two locals, Monica Bill Barnes and Anna Bass, who will be carrying a bit of The Joyce Theater (literally) onto the stage of the Koch. The dance is an excerpt from the duo's madcap "Luster." After giggling at their witty antics, sit back for the New York premiere of Dwight Rhoden's "Charter," set to live music by the Nicholas Payton Quartet and performed by Wendy Whelan and Desmond Richardson. You may end up on the edge of your seat!
A round of applause for the Atlantic-crossing quartet of dancers from Lyon Opera Ballet, who will perform Benjamin Millepied's 2009 "Sarabande" danced to extracts from Bach's "Partita" for flute and from the "Sonatas et Partitas" for violin.
Finally, let's hear a cheer for updated nostalgia. A long-time favorite, not seen in New York City for almost a decade, Nederlands Dans Theater concludes the April 10 gala performance with a sneak preview of its stunning dancing, which can also be seen at the Koch on April 11 and 12. The company's choice for the gala-only-performance is its wonderfully witty "SH-BOOM!" choreographed by the company's artistic director Paul Lightfoot and house choreographer Sol León. NDT's following two nights will feature different works. Which is to say, come again. And again.
