Spencer Day

Mondays, July 12, 19 & 26 & at 7:30 PM

"Put him in the company of Rufus Wainwright, Nellie McKay and other young singer- songwriters who have open hearts and something new to say." - TimeOut New York

Vocalist-songwriter-pianist Spencer Day is an artistic vagabond, a modern-day musical nomad. Born in Utah, raised in rural Arizona, currently living in Los Angeles with extended residencies in New York and San Francisco, Day has called many places home. Along the way, he has wandered amid the expansive and diverse landscape of American music, developing an artistic sensibility that borrows from numerous sources: jazz, musical theater, cabaret, soul, folk, traditional pop and contemporary pop are just the tip of the iceberg. Day uses intuition and improvisation as his primary tools to craft a sound that is traditional and familiar, yet fresh and innovative at the same time, creating a blend too subtle to parse into neatly defined categories. Vagabond, his new release and his first on Concord Jazz, cements his reputation as a balladeer for the new century whose creative voice is distilled from the best elements of the previous one. $15 in advance/ $20 at the door

LUCY WAINWRIGHT ROCHE

Tuesday, July 27 at 7:00 PM

"Sincere and raw, at times recalling Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin, Roche's bittersweet voice leaps out; she paints an indelible image...with her voice as the song's story unfolds... her beautiful voice is all her own." - NPR Song of the Day

Lucy Wainwright Roche grew up in Greenwich Village, the daughter of two performing musicians--Loudon Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche (The Roches). Her childhood was spent living out of a suitcase, either on the road with her parents or being ferried around to different relatives in her big musical clan. Although she loved traveling as a kid and took to writing songs at an early age, Lucy was the child of rebels and pursued her own path, leading her to attend Oberlin College, pursue a Master's Degree in education and become a second and third grade teacher. But music was in Lucy's blood, and when her brother Rufus Wainwright invited her to sing backup on a few tours in 2005 and 2006, she left the classroom to pursue her music. Drawing on her experiences from teaching and traveling, she began writing new songs and recorded her debut CD 8 Songs in 2007, receiving rave reviews from National Public Radio and The New York Times. She hit the road full-time, playing across North America, Europe and Australia with such notable acts as Amos Lee, Dar Williams, Neko Case, Mary Gauthier and Teddy Thompson. Her crystalline voice, charming stage presence and refreshingly honest songwriting has made her a quick favorite with audiences, whether she's playing in a theater, rock club or a national radio show like Mountain Stage. $17
