The Sixth Annual United Solo Festival held at New York City's Theatre Row welcomes the World Premiere of actor/playwright Joe Gulla's "DADDY". This one-man show will serve as the final chapter of Gulla's popular "Bronx Queen Trilogy". "FAGGY at 50", the second chapter of the trilogy, was awarded the United Solo Award for "Best One Man Show" at the 2014 United Solo Awards.
"When I wrote 'The Bronx Queen', I never considered that it would be the first chapter of a trilogy. But, its success informed me. It was a starting point and I had to complete the journey. 'FAGGY at 50' was the perfect second stop.. I believe 'Daddy' will be an appropriate punctuation mark. Ideally, a bold exclamation point!"
The playwright states, "Like last time, my set-up is an homage to the legendary monologuist, Spalding Gray. In so many ways, Spalding's been my inspiration and, yeah, my personal "monologue DADDY"!! I sit at a desk with black binder and water bottle at the ready..."Spalding Gray-style!"
"'The Bronx Queen' was my 'coming of age' monologue. 'FAGGY at 50' was my 'getting to a certain age' monologue," Gulla jokes. "Daddy' is all about me coming to terms with, you guessed it, my "inner Daddy".
"A 'Daddy' can mean different things to different people. I explore all of those possibilities in my show. As a gay man, the concept of a 'gay Daddy' always fascinated me, yet intimidated me. Webster defines a 'Daddy' as the 'oldest, best, or biggest example of something'. That's a lot of responsibility for a simple word/title. How much of it applies to me? How much of it is supposed to?"
Gulla's "Daddy" chronicles the playwright/actor's life from his early twenties living in Manhattan to his years living in Ibiza, Spain and Rome, Italy. As always, Joe weaves in stories from his days growing up as a gay Bronx Italian.
"When I got to Ibiza in 1995, there was a bar called 'Crisco'. The name reminded me of my grandmother. She always used Crisco Oil and Shortening when she cooked. Let's just say that the guys at "Crisco. Ibiza" were using those products too, but for entirely different reasons! Ha! Navigating that was, dare I say, a 'slippery slope'!
Joe Gulla is also the author of "Reel Wood" which was a huge success at the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival. Joe also penned "Knock Off!" premiering July 24th at Theatre Southwest's "Festival of Originals'. Joe is also the author of "Garbo".
Theatre Row is located at 410 W. 42nd Street. Tickets to the September 19 and October 8 performances of "Daddy" can be purchased by calling Telecharge (212) 239-6200 or visit http://JoeGulla.com.
