Jed Bernstein to be a Guest Professor at SCAD

Broadway producer Jed Bernstein will be a guest professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design during the university's current Spring 2011 quarter, beginning April 14.

Bernstein will teach "Special Topics in Theatrical Production," an intense five-week course of producing for the theatre, from budget considerations to marketing and promotion to script analysis. Bernstein will bring special guests into the classroom, including Pulitzer, Oscar and Tony Award-winning playwright Alfred Uhry and producer/director/actor Gordon Greenberg.

"It is such a great honor to be a member of the SCAD faculty this spring quarter and to have the opportunity to share some insights about the ‘business behind the show'," said Bernstein. "Whether you are a director, designer or a performer, knowledge is power. The more you know about your chosen business the better you can manage your own career."

"We are very fortunate to have Jed here for our students," said Michael Wainstein, chair of SCAD's School of Performing Arts. "He has an invaluable wealth of knowledge in all aspects of theatre, which will give our students front-line, real-world knowledge."

Formerly the President of the League of American Theatres and Producers (now the Broadway League), Bernstein launched Above the Title Entertainment, a new Broadway/television Production Company and marketing consultancy, in 2006.

Above the Title Entertainment has produced the seven-time Tony-nominated, "Passing Strange," the smash revival of "Equus" starring Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe, the Tony-winning revival of "Hair," the critically-lauded West End transfer of "Duet For One," and the highly-praised revival of David Mamet's "Oleanna", starring Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles. Currently, Bernstein is producing "Driving Miss Daisy" on Broadway starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave, and a newly re-imagined revival of Stephen Schwartz's "Working" in Chicago.

Bernstein is also in his sixth year as executive director of the Commercial Theater Institute, a joint project of the Broadway League and Theater Development Fund, responsible for training the next generation of theatre Producers.
