According to the Belfast Telegraph, actor Jason Donovan and former member of the Spice Girls Mel C have signed on to assist Andrew Lloyd Webber in his search for the character of Jesus in the JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR tour. The show, entitled 'Superstar,' will air on ITV1. 

'Superstar' auditions are currently underway. The search has been held in London, Dublin, Belfast, Manchester, Glasgow and Cardiff. Donovan and Mel C will help narrow down the performers to 40 during "callbacks," which begin today and will last for three days.

Judges for the show still have yet to be announced.

'Superstar' has been described as "a brand new show that will give the British public the chance to choose the country’s next major rock star." 

The winner of the show will be given the lead role in the JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR tour, opening at London's O2 Arena.

Donovan has had a career as both an actor and world-wide recording artist, selling over 13 million albums to date. His West End theatre credits include ‘Tick' in "Priscilla Queen of the Desert", the title role in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and ‘Caractacus Potts' in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". His touring credits include ‘Frank N Furter' in "The Rocky Horror Show", the title role in John Doyle's production of Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" and  ‘The Artilleryman' in "The War of the Worlds". His television credits include "Neighbours" and "Echo Beach". He was also a finalist in ITV's  hit "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!".

Mel C is the Spice Girl formerly known as Sporty. International acclaim for Melanie C and fellow Spice Girls has followed the group since their  entry into the music scene in 1996. Melanie C, whose real name is Melanie Jayne Chisholm, has five solo albums and has earned nominations for Brit and Echo Awards, and secured the spot at the top of the Billboard Dance Chart in America. She made her West End debut as Mrs. Johnstone in BLOOD BROTHERS.
