The Huntsville Times reports that country singer Jamey Johnson is performing July 30 at the Von Braun Center Arena in Huntsville along with country legend Merle Haggard.

Johnson, a huge fan of classic old country music regularly performs oldies in his stage shows, including Kris Kristofferson's "For the Good Times," Vern Gosdin's "Set ‘Em Up Joe," Mel Tillis's "Mental Revenge" and "Lonely at the Top" co-written by the late Keith Whitley. Merle Haggard is one of Johnson's biggest heroes and the two are performing in concert Saturday at the Von Braun Center's Arena. In fact, Johnson was part of the Kennedy Center Honors that paid tribute to Haggard last December.

Johnson's love for classic country came early.  He was raised in Montgomery listening to some of the state's finest musicians, Hank Williams Sr. and Hank Jr., Vern Gosdin and the group Alabama. When Johnson got his first guitar at 10 years old, his uncle taught him to play Alabama's "My Home's Alabama."

Johnson eventually co-wrote Trace Adkins' hit, "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" and also won a CMA Award for co-writing George Strait's "Give It Away." In between that, Johnson released his debut album, "The Dollar" in 2006, which produced a hit with the title track.

He released "That Lonesome Song" in 2008 and the album was praised by several publications, including Rolling Stone and The New York Times. It also led to invitations from Willie Nelson to play Farm Aid and to appear on Letterman and Leno. The song "In Color" was named the Song of the Year by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. During 2009-2010, Johnson earned five Grammy Award nominations, toured with Hank Williams Jr. and was one of the few country acts asked to play the Bonnaroo festival in 2010.

Johnson's latest 25-song, double album, "My Guitar Song," is up for the Academy of Country Music's Album of the Year and it's been nominated for two Grammys, Country Album of the Year and Best Male Country Vocal Performance for "Macon."
