Jalopy Theatre Brings Live Outdoor Music to Governors Island Beaches Today, 9/8

Jalopy-Theatre-Storms-Governors-Island-Beaches-98-20010101

The Fabulous Jalopy Theatre and School of Music invite you to celebrate the end of summer with an afternoon of outdoor traditional music at five locations on Governors Island, featuring 15 local acts performing a variety of Appalachian old-time string band music, Americana, jug band, blues, Son Jarocho, and original folk songs. That's right, 25 hours of live music in a single day.

The free street music fair takes place along the circular path on the northern side of Governors Island, where attendees can leisurely walk and bicycle between five locations where bands will each play 45-minute sets.

Featured performers include: M. Shanghai String Band, Willy Gantrim, Radio Jarocho, The Whiskey Spitters, The 4 O'clock Flowers, Karen Duffy, The Brotherhood of the Jugband Blues, Feral Foster, The Maybells, the East River String Band, the Easy Rollers, and the fabulous duo of Pat Conte and Joe Bellulovich.

While the event is free, tips for the performers will be much appreciated! Food is available for purchase from Governors Island vendors at two locations: King Avenue Food Court and Picnic Point. Bring a blanket and picnic on the lawn! Visit www.jalopy.biz for the complete line-up and for more information. And find them on Facebook here: http://ow.ly/deeQY. In the case of rain, the event will take place the next day on Sunday, September 9.

"The Jalopy Theatre is blessed to be a home for local musicians throughout the year, but we are just thrilled to feature traditional music outdoors on the beautiful Governors Island," says Lynette Wiley, co-owner of the Jalopy Theatre, located nearby in Red Hook at 315 Columbia Street.

Free ferries to Governors Island leave from Manhattan's Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street and Brooklyn's Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The East River Ferry provides service to Governors Island from Long Island City, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, DUMBO, Manhattan's Pier 11 and Midtown. See Governors Island's website for the complete ferry schedule: http://govisland.com.

For six years, the flourishing New York City folk and traditional music scene has found a home at The Jalopy Theatre, a recently expanded venue with a performance hall, tavern, instrument store and folk music school.
