Irish Rep Hosts GIBRALTAR Reading Today

By:

The Irish Repertory Theatre (132 West 22nd Street) continues its sixth season of the Irish Rep Reading Series, with a free reading of GIBRALTAR -- Patrick Fitzgerald's adaptation of James Joyce's "Ulysses" today, December 14 at 2:30 p.m. at the Irish Repertory Theatre (132 West 22nd Street).

Patrick Fitzgerald's GIBRALTAR is adapted from James Joyce's Ulysses. At the heart of that masterpiece lies a simple love story: Somewhat tragic, somewhat comic (and all too human), it is the story of Leopold and Molly Bloom.

GIBRALTAR will be read by playwright and actor Patrick Fitzgerald and Caroline "Cara" Seymour.

Playwright Patrick Fitzgerald made his New York debut in the Irish Rep's first production and has appeared in numerous productions for the company since. Most recently he played the title role (again) in Charlotte Moore's production of Dion Boucicault's The Shaughraun. He won the Clarence Derwent Award for Hal Prince's Grandchild of Kings. Other theatre credits include Mike Leigh's Ecstasy (Obie Award), The Sisters Rosensweig (Lincoln Center and Broadway), Mojo (Atlantic) and A Clockwork Orange (Steppenwolf).

Caroline "Cara" Seymour co-stars in The Irish Repertory Theatre's revival of Brian Friel's The Freedom of the City, set to resume performances January 2, directed by Ciaran O'Reilly.

Literary Manager Kara Manning hopes that the Reading Series will "give playwrights, both emerging and more established, the invaluable opportunity to develop their new work in a supportive, safe environment and will also introduce some Irish playwrights, especially those who might not yet have the New York recognition they merit, to an American audience." The Irish Repertory Theatre's 2007 production of Stuart Carolan's Defender of the Faith and 2010 world premiere of Kelly Younger's Banished Children of Eve were alumni of the Reading Series.
