Tonight on American Idol the remaining 8 contestants took on the songs of Detroit artists. The mentor was the legendary Smokey Robinson.

First up was Candice who chose to sing I Heard it Through the Grapevine. After receiving notes from the singer, she took to the stage. As always, Candice was wonderful but it was not her best performance. I think that she is more suited for ballads. It was cool to see her in a different light though.

Next up was a performance from Kree and Janelle who put a country twist on a Madonna classic. It was an ok performance of Like a Prayer. They both have great voices, but for me they seemed on different pages with the direction of the performance. The judges said that Kree outshined Janelle.

With a tough act to follow, Lazaro was next. He decided to sing For Once in My Life by Stevie Wonder. It was definitely a much better performance than last week. I think that Lazaro can only get better. He seemed a lot for comfortable with the song choice and that really showed in his performance.

You Keep me Hangin On was Janelle's song choice and she brought her guitar on stage to accompany her. Janelle has got a really strong voice and it was her best performance so far. The judges agreed saying that she is a great solo artist and should stick to that.

Devin was next and he sang Tracks of My Tears by The Miracles. I was not familar with this song. Regardless, I thought that he gave a great performance. However, I don't think that this is the best he has to offer.

Another performance was next with Amber, Candice and Angie. They sang I'm Gonna Make You Love Me by The Supremes. They had great chemistry and they sounded fantastic together. Hopefully will will see them as trio again this season. They received a standing ovation from the judges.

Burnell was next and he sang My Cerie Amour. He gave it a very soft sound and it was a great performance. Last week's performance was better but I think he will be moving on regardless. The judges loved it.

Smokey Robinson's song Shop Around was the song choice for Angie. It was a fun performance and it showcased a different side to Angie. The judges thought it was off night and said that she needs to bring back the piano.

Amber went with Lately by Stevie Wonder. It was a pretty good performance and the judges agreed. Randy said it was the best vocals of the night. She has great control of her voice and I think that is her greatest strength. I also think that Amber will be on the show for weeks to come.

The final group performance of the night consisted of Devin, Lazaro and Burnell. They sang Sugar Pie Honey Bunch made famous by The Four Tops. It was ok to say the least and they received harsh comments from Nicki.

Kree was the last solo performer of the night and she sang Don't Play that Song by Aretha Franklin. She did a great job with a song that I am not really familiar with. I really liked the fact that she showed a lighter side to her and her voice. The judges really liked the performance as well.

Tune in tomorrow night to see more group performances and another contestant get the boot.
