Hipgnosis Theatre Company Revives Brecht's 'Chalk Circle'

By:

The Hipgnosis Theatre Company presents a revival of Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle at The Theatres at 45 Bleecker in NYC. Performances will run from April 26 to May 11, 2008 in a limited engagement. The Caucasian Chalk Circle is directed by Margot Newkirk, with an original score composed by Demetrios Bonaros.

The Theatres at 45 Bleecker are located at 45 Bleecker Street between Lafayette and Mott Streets. Performances run Wednesdays-Sundays at 7pm with two additional performances on Tuesday April 29 at 7pm and Saturday May 10 at 2pm. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased by calling 212-239-6200, online at http://www.telecharge.com or in person at The Theatres at 45 Bleecker. Visit http://www.HipgnosisTheatre.org for more information on the company and the play.

Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle explores the complexities of wealth and ownership in a cross-cultural parable. In a war-torn village, plans are underway for a peaceful reconstruction. In celebration, a famous singer, with the help of the townspeople, performs an epic folktale that culminates in the story of The Caucasian Chalk Circle. The unlikely heroine of this winding tale is a simple maid who makes countless sacrifices to raise a child that is not her own. Through clever inversions and reversals, broad comedy, and liberal use of music and song, Brecht questions commonly accepted social mores and offers a hopeful alternative for a healthy society.

The Hipgnosis Theatre Company's mission is to place the communion between actor and audience – the unique alchemy of theater – squarely at center stage. Visit http://www.HipgnosisTheatre.org to learn more about their mission.

The cast includes Demetrios Bonaros (Pig Iron Theatre Company's Newborn Things), John Castro, Hal Fickett (Keen Company's Tea and Sympathy, solo show 65 at HERE), Pharah Jean-Philippe, John Kevin Jones (Jeffrey opposite Bryan Batt at Lincoln Center), Colleen Kennedy (An Inspector Calls on Broadway with Rosemary Harris), Matthew Kinney (365 Days/365 Plays at the Public Theater), Elizabeth Mirarchi, Dennis J. Paton, Ayanna Siverls, Douglas Scott Streater, Rachel Tiemann (Red Metal Mailbox's Old Tricks at the Chocolate Factory, 365 Days/365 Plays at the Public Theater) and Richard Ugino (If This Hat Could Talk directed by Tony-winner George Faison at the Apollo Theater).

The design/production team consists of John Castro (Assistant Director), Jessica Lynn Hinkle (Props Master), Krista Thomas-Scott (Costume Design) and Robert Nguyen (Lighting Design/Stage Manager).
