High School Students Become Metaperformers at Shadowbox Live

By:

This May, Shadowbox Live's metaperformers will share the stage with local high school students in the third annual installment of a very special performance, STEM Rocks the ‘Box!

For the past two years, Shadowbox Live's community outreach program, Shadowbox Live Gives Back, has hosted a one-night show featuring students from Metro Early College High School, a local STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) school. This year's event has been expanded to feature participants from not one, but two STEM schools: Metro and Linden McKinley STEM Academy.

The performances have been made possible in part by Battelle, who this year granted $7,500 to help fund STEM Rocks the ‘Box as part of their own community outreach.

"We know that high school students are the most underserved age group when it comes to the arts," said Stacie Boord, Community Relations Director for Shadowbox Live. "An experience like STEM Rocks the ‘Box is invaluable because it's not just about the performance. It also improves communication skills, teaches constructive criticism, and gives these students an unbelievable boost in confidence."

Students from Metro Early College High School and Linden McKinley STEM Academy auditioned for the Shadowbox Live production team earlier this week. A group of approximately 25 students will be chosen to participate in all the elements that make up a Shadowbox Live production, including vocal performance, comedic acting, dance, instrumental performance, lighting and sound engineering, and backstage work.

The students cast in the production will have two weeks of intensive rehearsals at Metro Early College High School, and one full day of dress rehearsals at Shadowbox Live before the performance on May 16th. The evening will include sketch comedy and rock ‘n' roll, with the high school performers blended seamlessly with the metaperformers of Shadowbox Live.

"It requires a great deal of commitment and hard work," said Boord, "but that's the wonderful lesson these kids can carry with them wherever their lives take them. They will see first hand how their hard work pays off, and they can be truly proud of themselves."

STEM Rocks the ‘Box is scheduled for Monday, May 16th, 2011, at 7:00 PM at Shadowbox Live at the Easton Town Center. Tickets are:
$225 VIP Table of 8 / $125 VIP Table of 4
$25 General Admission
$15 Metro and Linden McKinley HS student admission
