Hartt School Presents the Hartt Symphony Orchestra At Lincoln Theater 4/1

The Hartt School presents the Hartt Symphony Orchestra on Friday, April 1, at 7:30 PM in Lincoln Theater, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This concert of orchestral masterpieces is conducted by Edward Cumming, Hartt's Interim Director of Orchestral Activities and long-time Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Admission is $20, with discounts available for seniors, students, and groups. Admission is free for University of Hartford students, faculty, and staff with current University ID. The Orchestra performs Brahms' Hungarian Dance no. 5; Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, featuring Hartt faculty member Christopher Ladd, guitar; and Le sacre du printemps by Stravinsky.

According to Edward Cumming, this program is all about the dance. "Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps rocked the world at its premiere in May 1913. Today, nearly 100 years later, any performance of it is still considered a major event, not just because of its important place in history and the world of dance, but also because of the enormity of the orchestra, it's as big as it gets, and the Hungarian Dance no. 5 of Brahms has a real gypsy flavor to it," said Cumming.

"Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra is famous for its middle slow movement, in which one hears one of the greatest and most popular melodies in all of Western music. Framing this are two lively sections which are dances in everything but name," continued Cumming.

The Hartt School is the comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford that offers innovative degree programs in music, dance, and theatre.
