Hart House Theatre Presents Canopy Theater Co's LYSISTRATA 7/20-8/6
Hart House Theatre is proud to present Canopy Theatre Company's 11th Season of Outdoor Theatre for Downtown Toronto.
The talented and exuberant group of emergent artists that form Canopy Theatre Company will take to Philosopher Walk's unique outdoor stage for the 11th year. This season they explore one of ancient Greece's greatest comedies, Germaine Greer's adaptation of Aristophanes' hilarious battle of the sexes, Lysistrata. The show will run from Wednesday, July 20 through to Saturday, August 6, 2011.
Known for its bawdy humour, Lysistrata tells the tale of how one woman encourages a nation of lustful ladies to deny their husbands any sexual attention until the men declare peace and put a stop to civil war. Germaine Greer's adaptation keeps all of the expected phalli, sexually charged hijinks and anti-war rhetoric while also exploring issues of gender politics and class bias. Guaranteed to be the sexiest production ever seen on Philosopher's Stage, Lysistrata comes with a 'mature content' warning: This is not a family show!Andrea Wasserman, Canopy Theatre Company's Artistic Director, returns to direct this season after 2009's critically acclaimed production of Romeo and Juliet. "I am so looking forward to staging another Greek classic on Philosopher's Stage. Oedipus Rex [2006] and The Trojan Women [2004] worked so beautifully in the open air that I can't wait to get started with this outrageous comedy!" For the 11th Season of Outdoor Theatre for Downtown Toronto, Canopy Theatre Company looks forward to continuing its record breaking growth and production success.
Always proud to offer quality financially accessible theatre, Canopy Theatre Company's prices will remain at $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors; Wednesdays being Pay What You Can.Hart House Theatre presents the 11th Season of Canopy Theatre CompanyGermaine Greer's adaptation of Aristophanes'
