'Hair -- The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical'

By:

A Summer of Love and Sunshine in Lake Worth
The Lake Worth Playhouse

Presents

Hair

July 18th – August 9th

The Lake Worth Playhouse will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 'Summer of Love' with its production of HairThe American Tribal Love-Rock Musical.  The classic rock musical will open at the Lake Worth Playhouse on July 18th and run for four weeks – through August 9th.   Hair, which also celebrates its 40th birthday this year, features many songs that became an integral part of our musical and theatrical culture, including Age of Aquarius, Let the Sun Shine In and Good Morning Starshine.

Director/choreographer Rob Dawson of Fort Lauderdale has assembled a cast - most of whom were born long after the original production closed – to portray the 'Tribe' of hippies who band together in the East Village and try to save the world.

Along with Shane Blanford, familiar to Playhouse patrons from last summer's production of The Rocky Horror Show and Gina Nespoli (The World Goes 'Round, Thoroughly Modern Millie,) the cast includes several talented newcomers.  Konstantin Afthinos, Chanel Wright, and Meredith Cariski will make their Playhouse debut in this production.   Meredith traveled all the way from Miami to audition: "I really have to be in this show," she explained. "It's been my dream for years!"

Rob Dawson holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theater Performance from Kent State University, and recently earned his Masters degree in Library Science. As a performer he has danced in dozens of professional productions across the country. His critically acclaimed work as a choreographer has been seen Off-Broadway, as well as in regional, summer stock and resident theatres across the state of Florida. He has choreographed shows such as A Chorus Line, The King and I, La Cage aux Folles, Sweet Charity, Forever Plaid, The World Goes 'Round and Crazy for You. Dawson was nominated for a Carbonell award for his choreography for the New Vista Theatre's production of Funny Girl.

"When I was first thinking about Hair my fear was that it would be a dusty relic of the 1960's, like a tie-dyed t-shirt or a VW bus," says Rob Dawson.  "I thought forty years of history would make the script seem dated and naive. But when I read it, I was surprised at how much the themes of the show, written in 1968, are relevant to the times in which we live now.  The United States was governed by a largely unpopular president who led us into a war that many people felt we shouldn't be fighting.  Issues like race, feminism, ecology, and sexual morality were part of everyone's consciousness.  Young people, disinterested in their parents' quests for wealth and status, looked to spirituality, mind-expanding drugs, and free love for alternate ways of living.  So, the fashions and hairstyles may be different, but the stories the characters have to tell aren't."

Performances of Hair are on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 2 p.m.  There will be a performance on Sunday, July 20th at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $28 for front orchestra and $23 for rear orchestra. Tickets for all performances are on sale now and are available for purchase at the Playhouse box office at 561-586-6410 or online at: www.lakeworthplayhouse.org.  Group rates are also available.

There will be a special '$100,000 Gala Fundraising Performance' of Hair on Saturday, July 19th to celebrate the official lighting of the Lake Worth Playhouse's new marquee.  Tickets for this special event are $50.  The price includes a 7:30 p.m. reception before the performance and with an 8:30 p.m. curtain.
