Talking Heads' David Byrne, who with Fat Boy Slim wrote the cult Imelda Marcos musical HERE LIES LOVE, is bringing the life of another female icon to the stage.
The New York Post writes that Byrne is working on a Joan of Arc musical. The Post says to expect a workshop at The Public Theater, where HERE LIES LOVE got its start, sometime this year.
Byrne has reportedly "written just a handful of songs" and is currently penning the script, which is likely to feature "various periods and styles" as inspired by George Bernard Shaw, Bertolt Brecht and Martha Graham's previous stage interpretations of the martyr.
Joan of Arc has appeared as a character onstage in Shaw's ST. JOAN, Brecht's ST. JOAN OF THE STOCKYARDS, Jean Anouilh's THE LARK, Graham's THE TRIUMPH OF ST. JOAN, and in the musical GOODTIME CHARLEY, which featured Ann Reinking in the role, as well as Honegger's dramatic oratorio JOAN OF ARC AT THE STAKE, which starred Marion Cotillard alongside the New York Philharmonic this June.
Byrne previously worked with choreographer Twyla Tharp on THE CATHERINE WHEEL ballet and wrote part of the score for Robert Wilson's THE KNEE PLAYS FROM THE CIVIL WARS: A TREE IS BEST MEASURED WHEN IT IS DOWN opera.
