Guggenheim Premieres 'Coup De Foudre', 10/9-10

Guggenheim_Premieres_Coup_De_Foudre_20010101

On October 9th and 10th, The Guggenheim Museum will present Coup de Foudre, a multi-media performance inspired by Jean Cocteau's avant-garde film, The Blood of a Poet (Le Sang d'un Poete" 1930). This film is included in the upcoming Guggenheim exhibition, Chaos and Classicism.

In a theatrical re-interpretation of Cocteau's masterpiece, Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky will DJ his own original music score (performed by The Telos Ensemble) mixing live instruments and studio recordings. Corey Baker, artistic co-director of Ballet Noir and current "Fela" star, will convert the extreme physicality of the lead character in the movie into choreographic moments. Emmy award-winning Melvin Van Peebles will simultaneously read Cocteau poems.

Cocteau's work in film, painting, sculpture, poetry, and theatre, is characterized by a unique sense of interdisciplinary production, which continues to thrive in today's digital and multimedia contemporary art, including music videos and Youtube. Coup de Foudre explores the ambiguous relationship between modern compositional strategies, based on sampling and digital media, and the experience of tying cinematic history to contemporary times.
Prior to each performance, there will be special screenings of "The Blood of a Poet."
