Georgia Shakespeare Presents PAUL ROBESON, This Weekend Only
Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; Spenser: for Hire; A Man Called Hawk) gives a tour de force performance as Paul Robeson for three days only at the Conant Performing Arts Center.
Paul Robeson, originally produced on Broadway in 1979, combines poignant humor, drama, and music to bring to life the spectacular legacy of one of America's greatest athletes, academics, actors, singers and political activists. From his early days at Rutgers, through Columbia Law School and on to a spectacular international stage and screen career - including ground breaking roles as Othello on Broadway and Joe in Showboat ("Old Man River"), Robeson spoke for the voiceless in a tumultuous climate, breaking barriers and setting new precedents.
"When we think about Paul Robeson, we have to think about not just a magnificent American, but a world figure. He had audiences with heads of state. He was talking about apartheid in 1947. He talked about the embracing of mankind, the elimination of oppression, which we are looking at right now. I can celebrate all those things. This is not a mimicking of Paul Robeson. This is a portrait of one artist to another." - Avery Brooks (Read more)
