Gabriel Kahane Performs THE FICTION ISSUE World Premiere at Carnegie Hall in DON'T EVEN LISTEN Tonight, 10/25

Gabriel-Kahane-Performs-THE-FICTION-ISSUE-World-Premiere-1025-20010101

Singer-songwriter, instrumentalist, and composer Gabriel Kahane performs the world premiere of his composition The Fiction Issue, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, tonight, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall on a program entitled Don't Even Listen.

Mr. Kahane and guest artists-vocalist Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, and the adventurous string quartet Brooklyn Rider-collaborate on the premiere performance of The Fiction Issue as well as music from Kahane's second album Where are the Arms and his three-song cycle Come On All You Ghosts. Also on the program, Kahane surveys songs by Barber, Schumann, and Ives as well as Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Norman, Cee Lo Green, and others, exploring the intriguingly imprecise and overlapping boundaries of classical and popular song. The performance is preceded by a conversation, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with Kahane and Carnegie Hall's Director of Artistic Planning Jeremy Geffen.

On Monday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall, the Carnegie Hall Notables-a membership and ticket program for music enthusiasts in their 20s and 30s-hosts (un)common threads, a special Notables-only performance curated by Gabriel Kahane, seeking to uncover ties between seemingly disparate musical styles. Kahane's collaborators for (un)common threads include virtuoso jazz guitarist Julian Lage, indie-folk singer and songwriter Aoife O'Donovan, and four genre-defying musicians of ACME: American Contemporary Music Ensemble performing songs by Kahane, including excerpts from his popular Craigslistlieder cycle and his 2012 musical, February House, based on THE BOOK OF the same name by Sherill Tippins. Following the exclusive event, the Notables will gather at the Empire Hotel Rooftop for an after-party beginning at 8:30 p.m. with music by DJs Timo and Alan, designers of the Timo Weiland fashion collection.

(un)common threads is hosted by Carnegie Hall's Notables, whose support benefits the music education and community programs created by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute. For the November 5 performance and after-party, Notables members at the Supporter level (annual contribution of $500) and higher receive complimentary admission for two. Admission for non-members is $80 each with the price of each ticket applied toward a Notables membership. Tickets are not available to the general public. For more information, contact the Notables office at 212-903-9734, notables@carnegiehall.org, or visit carnegiehall.org/notables.

Gabriel Kahane has established himself as a leading voice among a generation of young composers redefining music for the 21st century. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times for "an all-around dazzling performance" in his orchestral debut of the premiere of his song cycle Orinoco Sketches with John Adams and the Los Angeles Philharmonic last season, Kahane's work defies classifications. This season Kahane performs at the University Musical Society of Ann Arbor, the Carolina Performing Arts Center, the Library of Congress, and with the Alabama and Waterloo-Cedar Falls symphonies. The culmination of his two-year composer-in-residency with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra will be a world premiere concerto for Kahane and the orchestra. His rich and focused sophomore album, Where are the Arms, features collaborations with Rob Moose (Bon Iver, Antony and The Johnsons, The National), Casey Foubert (Sufjan Stevens, Richard Swift, Pedro The Lion), and Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, St. Vincent), in eleven intricate and literate songs. Launched by his 2006 song cycle Craigslistlieder, Kahane has been commissioned by, among others, Carnegie Hall, Kronos Quartet, American Composers Orchestra, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the Caramoor Festival. As a theater composer, he has received commissions from the Signature Theater in Arlington, VA, and the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts. An avid chamber musician, he has performed with such artists as Alisa Weilerstein, Jeremy Denk, Jonathan Biss, and the Calder Quartet. A recipient of multiple fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and the Corporation of Yaddo, Kahane makes his home in Brooklyn, New York. The original cast recording of his 2012 musical February House will be released October 16, 2012.
