GLEE-CAP: 'Grilled Cheesus'

"It's a Grilled Cheesus!" Finn exclaims, thus beginning a 'Holy Cheesus' of an episode of Glee.  Gleeks, this week was kind of heavy with its take on God and spirituality being the front and center focus of the episode.  Finn makes a grilled cheese sandwich, which has the likeness of Jesus on it, thus making it a "Grilled Cheesus." Kurt visits his dad's garage to bring his dad his breakfast, leading to a conversation about their traditional Friday night dinners, which Kurt seems to find pointless now with his mother gone, much to Burt's disappointment. At rehearsal, the discussion of Finn's 'Grilled Cheesus' leads to a discussion on religion and varying opinions of it, the most harsh and agnostic coming from Kurt, who feels religion is a joke of sorts. Mr. Schuester decides to make the theme of the week spirituality, leading to Puck jumping up to perform "Only the Good Die Young" by fellow Jew, Billy Joel.

As he's helping a customer at the garage, Burt begins to feel chest pains and ends up fainting. Emma rushes to Will to alert Kurt of what has happened, getting Kurt and making their way to the hospital. Kurt's father had a heart attack and is in a coma and in serious condition, leaving Kurt shaken. The next day at school, the Glee Clubbers attempt to raise Kurt's spirits, Mercedes turns to music to heal Kurt's soul, with a rousing rendition of "I Look to You" by Whitney Houston, however Kurt does not feel anything beyond a grateful and sad thank you. Finn begins praying to his 'Grilled Cheesus', asking it to help the football team win their first game of the season, which they miraculously do.

Sue finds out about the topic of the week and confronts Will in Principal Figgin's office, thus getting the topic removed, much to Sue's enjoyment. After the success of the first wish, Finn turns to the 'Grilled Cheesus' to get Rachel to be more intimate with him, which works. On a moonlight picnic with Finn, Rachel performs the song she wanted to perform for Glee Club, "Papa Can You Hear Me?" from Yentl. After finishing her song at the foot of Burt's bed, Kurt enters the hospital room and is annoyed with the prayers he did not ask for.

Kurt finally takes to the microphone after remaining silent, singing the Beatle's classic, 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'. As Kurt sings, he remembers some of the fond memories he and his father shared as he grew up, told in flashback. After making a third plea to 'Grilled Cheesus' to get his quarterback spot back lands Sam injured, Finn is shaken, but still happy to have his spot back.  When Emma confronts a guilt-ridden Finn about his 'Grilled Cheesus', it zaps out the naïve hope that the 'Grilled Cheesus' was a direct link to God for Finn. In Glee-club style, Finn takes his thoughts and feelings and puts them in song, singing 'Losing My Religion' by REM.

Mercedes invites Kurt to attend church with her on Sunday, which he begins to turn down, until she mentions he may wear a 'fabulous hat', an offer fashionista Kurt cannot turn down. Mercedes leads her church choir in a version of 'Bridge over Troubled Water' dedicated to Kurt, bringing Kurt to tears.

Kurt returns to his father's bedside, talking to him about their traditional Friday night dinners, specifically the first one that occurred after his mother died.  Kurt takes his father's hand, only to feel his father squeeze back, showing signs of life.  Kurt rushes out excitedly, to alert the nurses that his father is alive.

And that was the gospel according to 'Grilled Cheesus.' Amen.
