GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN’s Flagship Show EXTERNAL Comes To Soho Theater

GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN's flagship show EXTERNAL will be coming to Soho Theatre for a limited run opening Wednesday 07 September, before beginning a national tour.

Maverick performance makers GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN challenge themselves to respond to
Belgian company Ontroerend Goed's recent smash-hit piece Internal. But with conflicting ideas about how to do that, some stuff they found in a garage and a strict no-touch policy, how close do they really want to get? EXTERNAL by no means requires its audiences to have seen Internal, as it cheerfully confronts the slippery questions of authenticity, originality, memory and authorship.

EXTERNAL was selected for SPILL National Platform 2011 (National Theatre Studio) and Sprint 2011 (Camden People's Theatre); Festival Belluard Bollwerk International in Switzerland and in the UK the show has played at the ICA, Shunt and Stoke Newington International Airport.

GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN are known for positioning their work in dialogue with other artists', spaces and audiences. They were commissioned as Platformed Artists at Arnolfini, Bristol this year to respond across the venue's programme to the 50th Anniversary theme ‘The Apparatus of Culture'.

Starting on 07 August and until the opening of EXTERNAL GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN will be posting ephemera on their website, collected during the two-year making process of the show. Director Hester Chillingworth said: ‘We want to have a conversation: EXTERNAL is about what it is to respond to another show, and we have been playing with and gnawing at that question for a long time now. By sharing material that has been part of that, we hope to open up the discussion itself so that we are already talking with our audience before they arrive at the theatre. We like to think of performance as dialogue, and we like to think that thinking about performance can become performance itself.'
