Fringe First-Winners Watford Palace Theatre Announce AFTER THE RAINFALL World Premiere for Edfringe
Acclaimed young ensemble curious directive returns to Edinburgh with a brand new show, following the outstanding, Fringe-First winning Your Last Breath at Edinburgh 2011. AFTER THE RAINFALL plays 1-27 August, 2012, at 15:40 (1 hour 15) at the Pleasance.
Created in collaboration with experts from a zoologist to a social media pioneer, After the Rainfall takes myrmecology (the study of ants) as a prism to view the present day. Spanning 70 years and settings from the Suez Canal to the British Museum and a Cumbrian mining town, it explores how a younger generation relates to ideas of empire, colonialism and communication.
After the Rainfall brims with curious directive’s distinctive fusion of multi-media video, original composition, dynamic movement, sound, scenography, multi-layered narratives and sand art. Collaborators on the piece include zoologist Henry Ferguson-Gow, evolutionary biologist Simon Watt (Channel 4’s Inside Nature’s Giants), geologist Dr Phillip Allen and social media expert Mike Sizemore alongside curious directive creatives.
curious directive makes rigorous, intelligent and emotional theatre, encouraging its audiences to be curious about the world peering through the lens of science. The company believes in making theatre which lets scientific ideas breathe. Since 2008, the ensemble of performers, scientists, choreographers, video artists, technicians, composers and designers has created 15 pieces of science-inspired theatre.
The company premiered Your Last Breath at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2011, where it won a Fringe First Award and was shortlisted for the Carole Tambor Award. Across 2012, it is presenting six works on varying scales as part of its Hexagon season. The season includes the premiere of After the Rainfall and a UK tour of Your Last Breath. Further works being developed during the season include Olfactory (a one-on-one experience co-produced by Lyric Hammersmith, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival and Latitude, June/July) and In The Image of You (a development laboratory project with West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Furnace programme, which took place in March/April).
After the Rainfall has been selected for Escalator East to Edinburgh 2012. Each year Escalator East to Edinburgh helps artists and arts organisations to raise their profile and perform to new audiences as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. curious directive are also supported by the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England.
