Free Play Reading - The Cherry Orchard
The nucleus of The Cherry Orchard focuses on a family coming back to their roots to hold on desperately to their past when confronted by the present; due to the matriarch's debts, the family estate is being auctioned off to reconcile them. The family tries several plans to gather the money quickly, even cutting down their famous tree.
This version of The Cherry Orchard was adapted in 2000 by Emily Mann and premiered at Princeton, New Jersey's McCarter Theatre where Mann serves as Artistic Director. Under her direction, the production starred Avery Brooks (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Jane Alexander (The Great White Hope) and John Glover (Smallville.)
Universally acknowledged as one of the masterpieces of world theatre, The Cherry Orchard is a tale where memories haunt, love triangles form and bitter rivalries return to surface. This Chekhov classic reminds us no matter what arises big or small, and with the support of true friends, families will stick together.
