Floyd Mutrux to Produce Rock Musicals Based on Elvis, Goldner et al.

Floyd Mutrux, head of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET co-Production Company American Pop Anthology, has plans to bring more musicals based on rock groups to Broadway, Variety reports. Of his plans, Mutrux says, "With American Pop Anthology, I've written a series of stories about the people who made the music that changed the culture of our country from the 1950s to 1980s, which ended with MTV...MTV took all the mystery out of rock 'n' roll. The record companies spent the money making videos and they stopped putting money into groups touring."

In addition to the previously reported BABY IT'S YOU, based on the Shirelles, Mutrux has three more musicals planned.

The first is HEARTBREAK HOTEL, based on Elvis Presley and Colonel Parker. Mutrux calls it "the prequel to MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET?"

The second is THE BOY FROM NEW YORK CITY, based on a romance between record producer George Goldner, who was heavily involved in payola, and a woman who will be called Maria in the musical.  Goldner dealt with such artists as Tito Puente, the Shangri-Las, and Little Richard.

Mutrux's third planned musical is called LONESOME TOWN and features such musicians as Buddy Holly, Ricky Nelson, and Eddie Cochran meeting in the afterlife to perform and discuss their lives.  Mutrux describes the story as "A CHORUS LINE for rock 'n' roll."

Of creating shows based on popular rock songs, Mutrux tells Variety, "If someone is licensing the catalog, would you rather be in a hit show ... or sit on the shelf?"
