Fireworks Finale Weekend Closes Out Hollywood Bowl Season, 9/16-18

By:

An intoxicating adventure through the City of Lights envelopes over the Hollywood Bowl for three nights of high-kicking dancers from the legendary Moulin Rouge, jazzy French cabaret sounds of Paris Combo, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra performing An American in Paris and other works led by Thomas Wilkins, Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17, at 8:30 pm, and Sunday, September 18, at 7:30 pm. The summer season finale of the Hollywood Bowl's dazzling fireworks display tops off each evening's festivities.

Thomas Wilkins has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra since 2008. He is also Music Director of the Omaha Symphony, a position he has held since 2005. During his conducting career, Wilkins has been featured with orchestras throughout the United States, including the Dallas Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Houston Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and the National Symphony in Washington D.C. He is also a frequent guest conductor of the New Jersey Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Recent debuts include appearances with the Rochester (NY) Philharmonic, the Utah Symphony, and the Boston Symphony. Future engagements include returns to the Boston Symphony, as well as the symphonies of Atlanta, Indianapolis, Dallas, San Diego, and New Jersey.

The Moulin Rouge, with a history dating back to 1889, is the most famous cabaret in the world and viewed as a symbol of the French culture for its famous French Cancan so often immortalized by Toulouse-Lautrec as well as its sumptuous Music Hall shows full of feathers, rhinestones and sequins. Seventeen of the 60 artists of the Moulin Rouge have travelled from Paris to perform at the Bowl the famous French Cancan acclaimed all over the world.

Following a five-year hiatus, Paris Combo, an eclectic group putting a jazzy twist on the French chanson tradition, returns to performing. This ensemble, with members from France, Australia, combines influences from gypsy-guitar legend Django Reinhardt and jazz, Latin, Eastern European, and North African grooves into their unique improvisational cabaret sound.
