Fine Arts Scholarships Awarded to Three Student Musicians

Three local high school musicians won cash scholarships for successfully competing in the 2011 James C. Macdonald Fine Arts Scholarship Competition, sponsored by the McLean Community Center (MCC) and the Alden Theatre. The theatre is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.

MCC 2010-2011 Governing Board Chairman David Sanders presented the awards at the final competition-performance, which was held on Friday, May 20, in the Alden Theatre.

The James C. Macdonald Fine Arts Scholarship Competition encourages artistic achievement and promotes study in the arts by high school students who reside or attend school in the McLean district (Small Tax District 1A of the Dranesville District). Scholarship prizes of $1,200 are awarded to students placing first in each of four categories: Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts. Second-place winners are awarded $800 and third-place winners win $400.

This year's competition only attracted the required number of qualified competitors in the Music category. The winners were:

Music
First Place Ryo Kaneko, Piano
Sophomore, McLean High School

Second Place Arman Nasrinpay, Violin
Sophomore, McLean High School

Third Place Michelle Kyeong-Eun Park, Piano
Junior, Langley High School

The judges for the competition were award-winning solo and chamber musician Seyon Lee, voice and piano coach Alvin Smithson, and actor, singer and pianist Jim Scopeletis.
