Fela's Son Brings his Afropop Band to Manuel Artime Theater on 7/29

By:

The son of Nigeria's famed Fela, Seun Kuti brings his late father's band Egypt 80 and his own fresh sound to Manuel Artime Theater, 900 SW First Street in Miami on Friday, July 29, 2011.

Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.

Fela was a political leader who became an international symbol of Africa's struggles and the subject of a hit Broadway show. His son, Seun (pronounced shay-oon) Kuti,  has an ample measure of his father's intensity and confidence. Now 28, Seun was only 8 when he began singing to open his father's shows.

"Up until now I still get that same adrenaline rush from when I was a kid," he says from Reno, a stop on the U.S. tour that brings him and his father's band, Egypt 80, to Little Havana's Manuel Artime Theater on Friday as part of the Rhythm Foundation's summer offerings.

"People will compare you to your father because you make Afrobeat music; they'll say you're trying to be like your father. But if you didn't make Afrobeat music, they'll say it's because you can't compare to your father," Kuti says. "You just have to do what you believe and satisfy yourself that you're not doing it for any other reason than pure love of the music."
