We go exclusively behind the scenes of the third day of callbacks for Superstar - Andrew Lloyd Webber's new search for a star to lead the cast of his planned concert revival of Jesus Christ Superstar - and it's all looking very exciting so far.

Callback judges Melanie C, Jason Donovan and David Grindrod were a surprise to all the singers: "The contestants only knew who was on the judging panel when they got out onto the stage - although obviously the shock factor worked a bit better on the first day - by this point, word had got around!" says our source.

"They all seemed to be very encouraging and keen for everyone to do well."

Andrew Lloyd Webber was there observing - but hidden away from the contestants, who didn't know he was there.

"Each contestant had to sing twice - one song of their own choosing that they thought best showed off their voice, and then Gethsemane," says our man there.

"It was a truncated version, obviously, but still one that required them to show a full range - I thought they coped surprisingly well.

"There were some genuinely outstanding performances - while one guy was performing, I could just feel the hairs on my arms standing on end."

The diversity that's been a hallmark of Lloyd Webber's talent searches so far is still in evidence - and there are one or two auditionees who you'll certainly know.

"It's interesting that they're seeing quite a wide range of people - there were lots of obvious 'rockers'" but some more unassuming types there as well who just lifted off the roof when they started singing.

"There were some real stars there - some people who just had such presence that you could really imagine working in an arena setting."
