EQUUS with Radcliffe & Griffiths to Start Previews Sep. 5 at
Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths will reprise their starring roles from the enormously successful 2007 London production of Peter Shaffer's EQUUS when the Tony Award-winning play begins previews September 5 and opens September 25, 2008 on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre (235 West 44th Street), it has been announced by The Shubert Organization, the play's producer on Broadway.
EQUUS will play a strictly-limited 22-week engagement on Broadway, through February 8, 2009. Tickets to EQUUS on Broadway will go on sale to all American Express Card members on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 9 a.m.
Directed by Thea Sharrock, EQUUS comes to Broadway from the West End, where the production received critical praise and played to SRO houses during its five-month engagement at the Gielgud Theatre last year. The production is designed by John Napier, with lighting design by David Hersey, and sound design by Gregory Clarke.
Daniel Radcliffe -- the international star of the series of "Harry Potter" films based on J.K. Rowling's best-selling novels -- plays Alan Strang in EQUUS, Mr. Shaffer's powerful and provocative story of a stable boy and the psychiatrist who tries to unravel the religious and sexual mystery that ensues when the troubled teenager blinds six horses. Mr. Griffiths plays DR. Martin Dysart, the psychiatrist who is facing his own doubts about his work when confronted with Strang's complex case.
Mr. Radcliffe, at age 19, has played the title role in all five of the wildly popular "Harry Potter" films to date, and will star again in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (Nov. '08) and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" expected in 2009. His performance in EQUUS was well-received by critics in London who were impressed by the nuance and depth of his role in the play, cast as he was against the boy wonder type of Harry Potter.
Richard Griffiths won the 2006 Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in THE HISTORY BOYS. He has appeared as Vernon Dursley, Harry Potter's uncle, in the first four "Harry Potter" films, and has also appeared in the films "Gandhi," "The French Lieutenant's Woman," "Chariots of Fire," and "The History Boys."
This production of EQUUS will be the play's first revival on Broadway since its debut when it won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1975, playing over 1000 performances during its celebrated engagement from 1974 to 1977. Peter Shaffer's other numerous plays include AMADEUS, winner of the Tony Award for Best Play in 1981, and LETTICE AND LOVAGE (1990).
Director Thea Sharrock has directed THE EMPEROR JONES at The National Theatre, HEROES in the West End and in Los Angeles, THE CHAIRS at the Gate Theatre and A VOYAGE ROUND MY FATHER at Donmar Warehouse and Wyndham's Theatre. She has been artistic director at Southwark Playhouse and Gate Theatre.
Designer John Napier's many Broadway credits include LES MISERABLES, SUNSET BOULEVARD, MISS SAIGON, CATS and the original production of EQUUS.
EQUUS was produced in London by David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers.
The Shubert Organization is currently represented on Broadway with the critically-acclaimed new musical PASSING STRANGE at the Belasco Theatre.
