ECLIPSED, POP! et al. Win 2010 Connecticut Critics Circle Awards
Connecticut's Courant Blog reports the 2010 Connecticut Critics Circle winners, awarded Monday evening. Winning for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Musical of the Year is New Haven's Yale Rep, for ECLIPSED and POP!, respectively.
Other Yale Rep winners include Outstanding Actor in a Musical (Brian Charles Rooney for POP!), Outstanding Lighting Design (Kevin Adams for POP!), and Chad Raines (Outstanding Sound Design for BATTLE OF BLACK AND DOGS).
Hartford Stage's ORPHANS' HOME CYCLE won several awards, including Extraordinary Theatrical Experience, Outstanding Actor in a Play (Bill Heck), Outstanding Director of a Play (Michael Wilson), and Outstanding Set Design (Jeff Cowie and David Barber).
Other Hartford Stage winners include Robert Wierzel's lighting design for THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN and the cast of GEE'S BEND (Tamela Aldridge, Teagle F. Bougere, Miche Brade and Kimberly Gregory) for Best Ensemble.
Nilaja Sun won Outstanding Actress in a Play for Long Wharf Theatre's NO CHILD... in New Haven.
Goodspeed Opera House won two awards for its current production ANNIE GET YOUR GUN: Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Jenn Gambatese) and Outstanding Choreography (Noah Racey).
The Westport Country Playhouse won two awards for its production of SHE LOVES ME: Best Director of a Musical for (Mark Lamos) and Costume Design (Candice Donnelly).
The national tour of IN THE HEIGHTS, which played the Bushnell in Hartford won the Touring Production award. Jenilee Simons Marques was awarded a Debut Performance honor for THE MIRACLE WORKER at the Ivoryton Playhouse.
Additionally, the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center was awarded the Tom Killen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Connecticut Theater just one day after receiving its Tony Award for Regional Theatre.
The Connecticut Critics Circle Awards were instituted to honor the actors, directors, designers, and others who help make Connecticut theater outstanding. Although the state is near Broadway and the New York theater scene, Connecticut theater does not stand in New York's shadow. Who better than professional Connecticut critics, writers, and broadcasters to bring recognition to those who labor so hard to make Connecticut theater what it is?
